About Us

Welcome to Dune Beach Hostel — a remote backpackers’ paradise hidden deep within untouched coastal dunes, where the rhythm of the Indian Ocean meets the spirit of adventure.

Founded by Rene, Mayra, Oliver, and Marion — the team behind the well-known Kruger Park Hostel — this is our next chapter. As a sister hostel, Dune Beach Hostel brings years of hospitality experience to a completely different landscape: wild, raw, and almost entirely untouched.

This is not just a place to stay. It’s a place to disconnect from the noise, reconnect with nature, and share unforgettable experiences with like-minded travellers. Surrounded by towering dunes, dense coastal forest, and endless ocean, you’ll find yourself immersed in something rare — real wilderness on the edge of the sea.

The Experience

Dune Beach Hostel sits on one of the most untouched stretches of coastline in southern Mozambique. This is a true “wild coast” — no crowds, no resorts, no noise. Just dunes, ocean, and endless sky.

The hostel is set within a rare coastal dune forest — a unique ecosystem where dense, jungle-like vegetation grows on ancient sand dunes just metres from the ocean. It feels like a rainforest, but without the constant rain — shaped instead by wind, salt, and shifting sands.

This area forms part of the Maputaland coastal forest ecosystem, one of the most biodiverse coastal regions in Africa. Around you, a remarkable mix of environments meet:

  • Giant rolling sand dunes
  • Tropical dune forest
  • Freshwater lakes and wetlands
  • The wild Indian Ocean coastline

The result is something few places on Earth can offer — a meeting point of desert, jungle, and ocean, all in one.

Days are yours to shape: surf the waves, ride along empty beaches, explore hidden dune paths, or simply relax and take it all in. At low tide, natural rock pools appear, creating calm, warm pockets perfect for swimming.

Evenings bring everyone together — sharing stories under vast starry skies, with the sound of the ocean always nearby.

Getting here is part of the adventure. Access requires a 4×4 drive through dunes and remote tracks — and that’s exactly what keeps this place special. Once you arrive, you’ll understand why: kilometres of empty beach, complete silence, and a feeling of true escape.

A Truly Unique Experience

Possibly the only backpacker hostel in the world where you can surf, dive, and ride horses on the beach — all in one place.

Dune Beach Hostel is where giant dunes, tropical forest, freshwater lakes, and the untamed Indian Ocean come together — remote, raw, and unlike anywhere else.
